It would take a zoologist to catalog all of the Beatles Animal Songs; whether in the air, on the ground or under the sea, the Fab Four have name checked many kinds of critters. They often chose species whose names have double meanings or symbolize social movements; one avian tune was inspired by a street address. Grab your binoculars and bug spray and join us in search of the Top 10 Beatles Animal Songs.

‘Rocky Raccoon’

From: ‘The Beatles’ (1968)

‘Rocky Raccoon,’ Paul McCartney’s Old West tune of love and revenge, was actually written 7,000 miles away from the black mountain hills of Dakota. ?I was sitting on the roof in India with a guitar ? John and I were sitting ?round playing guitar,? McCartney told Radio Luxembourg. ?And I started playing the chords of ?Rocky Raccoon.?? McCartney eventually changed Rocky?s name from ?Sassoon? to ?Raccoon,? because “it sounded more like a cowboy.?

Producer George Martin contributed the saloon-style honky-tonk piano as McCartney wrote the lyrics on the fly at Abbey Road. ?’Rocky Raccoon’ is quirky, very me,? McCartney said in ‘Many Years From Now.’ ?I like talking blues so I started off like that, then I did my tongue-in-cheek parody of a western and threw in some amusing lines. I just tried to keep it amusing, really; it’s me writing a play, a little one-act play giving them most of the dialogue.?

‘Hey Bulldog’

From: ‘Yellow Submarine’ (1969)

When former Manfred Mann lead singer Paul Jones recorded ‘The Dog Presides,’ the session featured barking sound effects and an unlikely drummer: Paul McCartney. A few days later, the Beatles entered the studio to record ‘Hey Bullfrog,’ which John Lennon in ‘All We Are Saying‘ would call, ?a good sounding record that means nothing.’

In ‘Many Years From Now,’ McCartney said, ?There’s a little rap at the end between John and I, we went into a crazy little thing at the end.? Recalling the Paul Jones session, McCartney unexpectedly began to bark like a dog. The Beatles liked it so much that they changed the title to ‘Hey Bulldog.’ McCartney explained, ?We always tried to make every song different because we figured, ?Why write something like the last one? We’ve done that.? We were on a ladder so there was never any sense of stepping down a rung, or even staying on the same rung, it was better to move one rung ahead.?

‘Blue Jay Way’

From: ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ (1967)

In Aug. 1967, George Harrison rented a house in the Hollywood Hills on a street named Blue Jay Way. A visit from former Beatles publicist Derek Taylor would yield one of the Top 10 Beatles Animal Songs, ‘Blue Jay Way.’ ?Derek Taylor got held up. He rang to say he’d be late. I told him on the phone that the house was in Blue Jay Way,? Harrison said in ‘The Beatles’ by Hunter Davies. ?There was a fog and it got later and later. To keep myself awake, just as a joke to pass the time while I waited, I wrote a song about waiting for him in Blue Jay Way. There was a little Hammond organ in the corner of this house which I hadn’t noticed until then… so I messed around on it and the song came.? The opening line, ?There’s a fog upon L.A. / And my friends have lost their way,? sets the spacey, psychedelic vibe, which is exaggerated by vocals played backwards during the mix.

‘Everybody?s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey’

From: ‘The Beatles’ (1968)

When John Lennon and Yoko Ono began taking heroin in 1968, it alarmed the other Beatles and directly impacted Lennon?s music. ?He was getting into harder drugs than we’d been into and so his songs were taking on more references to heroin,? Paul McCartney said in ‘Many Years From Now.’ ?Until that point we had made rather mild, oblique references to pot or LSD. Now John started talking about fixes and monkeys.”

Lennon, however, maintained that ‘Everybody?s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey’ was not about having a monkey on his back. ?That was just a sort of nice line that I made into a song. It was about me and Yoko,? Lennon said in ‘All We Are Saying.’ ?All this sort of madness is going on around us because we just happened to want to be together all the time.?

‘Dig a Pony’

From: ‘Let It Be’ (1970)

‘Dig a Pony’ was recorded during the famous rooftop concert of the film ‘Let It Be.’ Though ‘Dig a Pony’ was influenced by his relationship with Yoko Ono, John Lennon maintained that most of the lyrics were nonsense. In the documentary ‘Imagine,’ Lennon said, ?I was just having fun with words. It was literally a nonsense song. You just take words and you stick them together, and you see if they have any meaning. Some of them do and some of them don’t.?

Some that do have meaning may reference the Rolling Stones. Lennon once claimed that Mick Jagger and the boys repeatedly ripped off the Fab Four. Everything the Beatles do, Lennon told Rolling Stone,?Mick does exactly the same. They are not in the same class, musicwise or powerwise ? never were.? Which would explain this line: ?I roll a stoney / Well you can imitate everyone you know.? That?s cold, but it makes ‘Dig a Pony’ one of our Top 10 Beatles Animal Songs.

‘Piggies’

From: ‘The Beatles’ (1968)

In the 1960?s, ?pig? was a popular derogatory term for the police, but George Harrison said in ‘I Me Mine‘ that class and corporate greed, not cops, was the target of ‘Piggies.’ ??Piggies? is a social comment. I was stuck for one line in the middle until my mother came up with the lyric, ?What they need is a damn good whacking,? which is a nice simple way of saying they need a good hiding. It needed to rhyme with ?backing,? ?lacking,? and had absolutely nothing to do with American policemen.?

The track features a harpsichord, a string quartet and the sounds of pigs snorting, which Lennon put together from Abbey Road?s sound effects library. An additional verse, dropped from the record, was reinstated by Harrison in concert: ?Everywhere there’s lots of piggies / Playing piggy pranks / And you can see them on their trotters / Down at the piggy banks / Paying piggy thanks / To the pig brother.?

‘Octopus’s Garden’

From: ‘Abbey Road’ (1969)

Ringo Starr only wrote two songs for the Beatles: ‘Don?t Pass Me By’ and the wonderful ‘Octopus?s Garden.’ ?I wrote ?Octopus?s Garden? in Sardinia. Peter Sellers had lent us his yacht and we went out for the day,? Starr said in ‘Anthology.’ ?I stayed out on deck with the captain and we talked about octopuses. He told me that they hang out in their caves and they go around the seabed finding shiny stones and tin cans and bottles to put in front of their cave like a garden. I thought this was fabulous, because at the time I just wanted to be under the sea too. A couple of tokes later with the guitar ? and we had ‘Octopus?s Garden’!?

George Harrison, who helped Starr with the tune, acknowledged its lyrical depth. ?On the surface, it’s just like a daft kids? song, but the lyrics are great,? Harrison told Ritchie Yorke. ?I find very deep meaning in the lyrics, which Ringo probably doesn?t see.? The song?s undersea sound effects came from Starr blowing bubbles into a glass of water.

‘Blackbird’

From: ‘The Beatles’ (1968)

‘Blackbird’ was entirely a solo effort by Paul McCartney, accompanied only by his acoustic guitar and tapping foot, which was recorded by a mic on the floor. The sound of blackbirds was later overdubbed. McCartney wrote the song in Scotland, though he was inspired by racial turmoil in America. In ‘Many Years From Now,’ McCartney said, ?Those were the days of the civil rights movement, which all of us cared passionately about, so this was really a song from me to a black woman, experiencing these problems in the States: ?Let me encourage you to keep trying, to keep your faith, there is hope.?? The opening of ‘Blackbird’ reveals the influence of Bach?s ‘Bourree in E minor,’ a favorite of McCartney and George Harrison as young guitarists.

‘And Your Bird Can Sing’

From: ‘Yesterday… and Today’ (1966)

Throughout the Beatles? catalog, cryptic lyrics usually identify a tune as pure John Lennon. ??And Your Bird Can Sing? was John’s song,? Paul McCartney said in ‘Many Years From Now.’ ?I suspect that I helped with the verses because the songs were nearly always written without second and third verses. I seem to remember working on that middle eight with him but it’s John’s song, 80-20 to John.?

The reference to a ?bird,? or ?girl? in British slang, may be another slap at Mick Jagger, who would often boast about his girlfriend, pop singer Marianne Faithfull. But what makes ‘And Your Bird Can Sing’ one of the Top 10 Beatles Animal Songs is the rich double-lead guitar work by McCartney and George Harrison.

MagicalMystery

1

‘I Am the Walrus’

From: ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ (1967)

It?s no mystery why the lyrics of John Lennon?s classic, ‘I Am the Walrus,’ are confusing; the song is a stew of influences that include a nursery rhyme and a poem by Lewis Carroll, who wrote ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ Psychedelics also played a part in writing the first two lines: ?I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all togetherSee how they run like pigs from a gun, see how they fly.” ?The first line was written on one acid trip one weekend,? Lennon said in ‘All We Are Saying.’ “The second line was written on the next acid trip the next weekend, and it was filled in after I met Yoko.?

The playground rhyme, ?Yellow matter custard, green slop pie, all mixed together with a dead dog’s eye? would become ?Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog’s eye.? Carroll?s poem, ?The Walrus and the Carpenter,? would provide the title character. As the song ends, we hear a few lines from Shakespeare?s ‘King Lear.’ Lennon chanced upon a BBC radio broadcast of the play, recorded it and mixed it into the song.

Rumors Swirl About ”Love & Hip Hop” Stars

Rasheeda Hooked Up With Scrappy?

“Love & Hip Hop” stars Rasheeda and Lil Scrappy have got the rumor mill working overtime. Rasheeda’s husband Kirk Frost has openly questioned her pregnancy, and there may be a valid reason for it. There is talk that she and Scrappy have been spending time together.

Of course, Scrappy should already have enough drama on his hands, with his always-close relationship with his “buddy” Shay Johnson and his ex-fiance Erica Dixon on the sidelines.

Neither Scrappy nor Rasheeda have addressed the chatter.

off the record, from @U2

It?s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Everywhere you turn.
Bono?s on morning TV
Talking about poverty
And Edge is out and about at social gatherings.

It?s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Hopes of CDs out in the stores
2014 Grammys on January 26th
Eligibility?s only ?til September 30th
No pressure on U2?s front door.

Our first 80-degree day in a while and I?m humming Christmas tunes, I know. But let?s face it, the signs are all there. Bono?s back to his usual front-and-center activities. He celebrated his birthday May 10 with the band and his friends in Dublin. He then flew to New York City for the Robin Hood Foundation?s benefit, singing ?One? and ?Moment Of Surrender? with Mary J. Blige. Then he was interviewed at The Spotted Pig restaurant by Charlie Rose for both his own show and CBS This Morning. It should be noted that Bono is one of the partners in the restaurant, along with Jay-Z, Mario Batali, Michael Stipe, Paul McGuiness and a few others. Not sure if this was the same meal shared with Dr. Jeff Sachs. He was also seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art?s rooftop for a new installation.

As a proud papa, he also turned down a commencement address request and an honorary degree from New York University so as not to upstage his daughter?s achievement in receiving her degree.

Rounding out the weekend, Bono introduced The Killers before they performed at the Saturday Night Live cast after party in the wee hours this morning outside 30 Rockefeller Center.

Not to be outdone, Edge was seen in New York City at the Guggenheim Museum for its Arcane Collective event May 11 and 12, celebrating his wife?s work Cold Dream Colour. He also joined in a moderated discussion with the collaborators on the production.

On Tuesday he was spotted at 10 Downing Street meeting with Samantha Cameron and other representatives of Mencap. You might recall that his cousin, Ciara, works for Mencap.

As someone who has studied this band for close to 25 years, I see all the signs there for the fall. They?re coming out of their cocoons and resuming their public appearances. For me, I might as well start my U2 Advent calendar. Let the countdown commence!

As you might have noticed from the amount of links above, social media has been most helpful in keeping up with the comings and goings of our favorite band. As expected, social media usage was one of the topics of conversation at last month?s U2 Conference. What struck me was the way Jim Henke, Brian O?Neal, Jim Gorman and a few others felt that U2 was making a mistake in not fully embracing the world of social media.

In 2010, Edge said to Gibson.com, ?I?m intrigued by new movements in digital domain and Twitter came along ? I didn?t like the idea of a dialogue. From my experience words on the ?Net are very easy to misinterpret ? But I thought an interesting way to use Twitter is to just use a photo diary so I?ve been sending loads of photographs out on this Twitter and people seem to like it.?

I have to wonder if his opinion will change when the new album is released. It will be difficult to market their new release without social media. I will be very interested in seeing what the app will be that U2 will release at that time too. It was mentioned at the U2 Conference that every image created for the band has been handed over for this application, so time will soon tell.

As part of my midlife crisis, I?ve been moonlighting with other fan clubs. Most recently, I signed up for Michael Buble?s Bungalow-B. This is the first official fan club that I?ve paid for outside of U2. For $29.99, I received ticket presale access for his upcoming tour, a copy of his new album, a digital copy of the new album (saving me time from ripping it), a discount in his online store and access to the online fan club for the next 12 months. There were other levels of membership available with other benefits that would rival U2?s fan club cost. What I found interesting was that ?legacy? members (a paid member for two-plus years) had a four-hour head start on the ticket presale, and the ability to purchase four tickets (four for one show or two for two shows). ?Standard? members had access to two tickets for one show. While there was no guarantee that tickets would be available, I had no issue getting the two tickets.

What struck me, however, was that Buble?s fan club had no access to the front sections of the floor. Instead, rows 1 through 5 in sections 1, 2 and 3 were available through online auction only. As much as I could see U2.com following suit with the various membership pricing and ticket presale code availability, it pained me to see that members of Buble?s fan club could not have close access to the act they?re paying $30 or more to support online annually.

With a potential U2 tour in 2014, I can only hope that the fans (legacy or not) who pay for fan club access can still be allowed to be in those coveted areas near the stage without going through an auction like Buble fans or paying thousands of dollars like Bon Jovi fans do.

And finally ? something special for Larry fans. ?The white T-shirt is a symbol with hunky, sexy male.? (It gets good around 1:37) Who knew Larry?s favorite film growing up was West Side Story?

Have a great week!

Fans who attended the Anaheim, Calif. date of the Rolling Stones? ?50 & Counting? Tour? got a little bit more than they bargained for Saturday night (May 18). Former Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl came out mid-set at the Honda Center to join the legendary rockers for a searing rendition of ?Bitch.?

It wasn?t a last-minute jam; the Stones teased Grohl?s appearance via Twitter earlier Saturday. Clad in his usual post-grunge attire of plaid shirt and jeans, a joyous Grohl banged out the guitar parts along with Keith Richards and traded vocals with Mick Jagger in what must have seemed like an impossible rock and roll dream come true.

The set proved there?s still life in the band; unlike some of their more bloated past tours, the Stones sounded rawer, more stripped-down, lean and mean on Saturday night. Former Stones guitarist Mick Taylor also joined the band for ?Midnight Rambler? and ?(I Can?t Get No) Satisfaction).?

The group?s current tour has provided plenty of surprises for fans. Gwen Stefani and Keith Urban were onstage on opening night in Los Angeles, while Tom Waits, John Fogerty and Katy Perry have also jumped onstage at various dates.

As for Grohl, he?s starting to make a habit out of jamming with legends; he recently said that inducting Rush into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and jamming with them at the induction ceremony was ?one of the most special nights of my life.?

The Rolling Stones will perform at the Staples Canter in Los Angeles on Monday (May 20) before heading to Toronto for a gig next Saturday (May 25).

It’s looking like Anchorman: The Legend Continues is going to have a healthy dose of Hip-Hop star power. Besides Kanye West, YMCMB’s Drake, who was recently spotted in the studio with Jay-Z, makes a cameo in the film, too.

Reports the New York Daily News:

As if there wasn’t enough of a star-studded cameo list including Kanye West, Kristen Wiig, Amy Poehler, Jim Carrey, Tina Fey and Harrison Ford to keep fans in a glass case of emotion over, it appears rapper Drake has made a debut.

In a photo snapped Saturday in New York circa 1977, a male donning a fro and leather jacket who looks strikingly like the “Take Care” singer was seen on set.

Fellow rapper and guest star West, filmed his scenes last week also sporting an afro and leather jacket choking Steve Carrell’s character with a hockey stick.

Yeezy also rocks an afro and looks like he is blessing Steve Carell’s character with the fade courtesy of a hockey stick in photos of his appearance from the set. Anchorman: The Legend Continues is due in the theaters by the end of the year. Drake’s new album, Nothing Was The Same, is in stores sometime this summer.

Check out a photo of Drizzy rocking a chin strap afro and 70′s style Member’s Only leather jacked on the next page.

Drake Posts Teyana Taylor Pic

What is going on with Drake and Teyana Taylor?

Young Money rapper Drizzy posted a very affectionate-looking Instagram photo of himself and G.O.O.D. Music artist Teyana Taylor looking booed-up. To add to the intrigue, Taylor re-posted the image on her own account shortly thereafter.

Under his post, Drake added a caption that seemed to indicate there’s something there.

“F**k all yall n***as…except my n***as…meet the exception,” it read, with the added hashtag, “#DayOne”

Could this be the start of a YMCMB/G.O.O.D. alliance? Or would Drizzy and T.T. be hip-hop’s star-crossed lovers?

And isn’t Taylor one of Chris Brown’s peeps?

With over 7,000 items in our news archives, it’s a safe bet you haven’t read all of them! This month we start our look at 1989.

The group that were once, by their own admission, the “world’s worst covers band,” now inspire a thousand cover versions by garage combos across the globe, while the fab four themselves, collectively and individually, continue to expand the limits of their own musical ambitions by collaborating and conspiring with the greats of rock ‘n’ roll past and present and by covering whatever — or whoever — takes their fancy.

The Edge in Russia, Propaganda

The Edge was one of a number of Western rock artists to visit Moscow on behalf of the campaigning environmental organisation Greenpeace. The occasion was the launch of an album of songs aimed at raising funds and awareness in the fight against global destruction. ”Russia was a both a lot freer in some areas and restricted in others than I thought,” Edge comments.

“What’s happened in the Irish music scene since we started out is great. There is an infrastructure and there are Irish bands producing records all the time. It just wasn’t so when we started out and it’s very satisfying, much more so than maybe a lot of the other stuff people feel we ought to be pleased about. The fact that there’s a real industry and people don’t have to go away to England — that’s exciting.”

Kanye West just may be a marketing genius. Last night, Yeezy sent out a rare tweet, revealing his new video for a song called “Rare Slaves” would be shown across the world. However, the clip wasn’t premiered via YouTube or Vevo, but projected on the sides of buildings.

“NEW SONG AND VISUAL FROM MY NEW ALBUM BEING PROJECTED TONIGHT ACROSS THE GLOBE ON 66 BUILDINGS, LOCATIONS @ http://KANYEWEST.COM,” read West’s tweet. His website provided addresses and times for when the video would be projected.

Stateside, the video appeared in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami. Other locales included Toronto, Sydney, Berlin and, of course, Paris

Plenty of Vines of the projection came in but the homie Mike Fresh nabbed the full clip. Watch below before it gets yanked off the net. Peep the lyrics after.

Tonight, Kanye West will be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live, which starts at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC.

My mama was raised in an era when/Clean water was only served to the fairer skin
Doing clothes you would have thought I had help/But they wouldn’t be satisfied unless I picked the cotton myself
You see its broke n?a racism/That’s that don’t touch anything in the store
And there’s rich n?a racism/That’s that come here please buy more
What you want a Bentley, fur coat and diamond chain?/All you blacks want all the same things
Used to only be n?as /Now everybody play me
Spending everything on that Alexander Wang/New Slaves

[Hook]
You see it’s leaders and it’s followers/But I’d rather be a d-ck than a swallower
You see it’s leaders and it’s followers/But I’d rather be a d-ck than a swallower

[Verse 2]
I throw these Maybach keys/I wear my heart on my sleeve
I know that we the new slaves/I see the blood on the leaves
I see the blood on the leaves/I see the blood on the leaves
I know that we the new slaves/I see the blood on the leaves
They throwing hate at me/Want me to stay at ease
F-ck you and your corporation/Y’all n?as can’t control me
I know that we the new slaves/I know that we the new slaves
I’m about to wild the f-ck out/I’m going Bobby Boucher
I know that pussy ain’t free/You n?as pussy, ain’t me
Y’all throwing contracts at me/You know that n?as can’t read
Throw him some Maybach keys/F-ck it, c’est la vie
I know that we the new slaves/Y’all n?as can’t f-ck with me
Y’all n?as can’t f-ck with Ye/Y’all n?as can’t f-ck with Ye
I move my family out the country /So you can’t see where I stay
So go and grab the reporters/So I can smash their recorders
Yeah they confuse us with bullsh-t/Like the New World Order
Meanwhile the DEA/Teamed up with the CCA
They tryna lock n?as up/They tryna make new slaves
See that’s that private-owned prison/Get your piece today
They prolly all in the Hamptons/Braggin’ ’bout they maid
F-ck you and your Hampton house/I’ll f-ck your Hampton spouse
Came on her Hampton blouse/And in her Hampton mouth
Y’all ’bout to turn sh-t up/I’m ’bout to tear sh-t down
I’m ’bout to air sh-t out/Now what the f-ck they gon’ say now?
