?Playing in a trio is very tricky for me, honestly.? In a 2009 interview for Bagetellen, trumpeter Nate Wooley describes struggling with the trio dynamic, often feeling as though someone must end up the ?wild card,? running the risk of jutting awkwardly into the musical conversation. But he also goes on to describe trios in which he?s forged singular connections, groups that have settled into unspoken modes of operation that elevate all the musicians involved.

Six Feet Under, released as a very limited LP by NoBusiness Records, was recorded a few months after that interview. Opener ?Pushing Up Daisies? starts quite immediately with Wooley?s quiet, bubbling lines and the gentle scraping of bassist Christian Weber. It soon establishes the dynamic that prevails throughout the record: an almost symbiotic pairing of Wooley and Weber, supplemented subtly by Paul Lytton?s clattery percussion. Often, the bass and trumpet meld into textured drones that may as well be a single sound, with Wooley?s long, scratchy tones dissolving into the arco bass. Weber is a particularly attentive improviser: he listens closely to Wooley?s phrasings and changes in timbre, often matching or highlighting them with a speed and clarity that reminds me of the great sax-player John Butcher.

The black theme running through the song titles is fitting. The atmosphere is occult and abstract, especially in the quieter moments. ?Moribund? drags itself along, beginning almost out of earshot?you find yourself holding your breath, trying to pick up on Lytton?s faint rattles and thumps. Close listening suddenly feels like eavesdropping. The patches of alien noise that erupt in ?La Grande Morte? sound like attempts to conjure something dark and Lovecraftian. At times, it?s not at all clear who?s doing what, only that they must have some secret understanding of the terrain they?re investigating. Even at its loudest, there?s a measured quality to the music, an intuitive sense of direction that?s shared by all.

Final track ?Check Out Time (The End)? closes with Wooley and Lytton sputtering out static, like a radio transmission that?s being lost. It funnels down into a sole, reedy note held on the trumpet, then expires with a click. It?s a perfect ending, and once again affirms that?despite his reservations?Wooley?s not only survived a trio encounter, he?s absolutely nailed it.

Neil Young Booker T. and the MGs

eBay

In memory of the late, great Donald ?Duck? Dunn, the bassist for Booker T. and the MGs who passed away Sunday morning at the age of 70, we decided to pay tribute to him today in our Rock Memorabilia category. We found a poster from the tour when the legendary Stax house band backed up Neil Young in 1993 that recently sold for $660 on eBay.

Young had long been a fan of Booker T. and the MGs. The bridge on his 1967 Buffalo Springfield song ?Mr. Soul? features a musical quote from Otis Redding?s ?I Can?t Turn You Loose,? on which Booker T. and the MGs play. But he had never worked with them until 1992 when they were the back-up band for the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary concert at Madison Square Garden. They performed two songs together, ?Just Like Tom Thumb?s Blues? and ?All Along the Watchtower,? and Young sang a verse on the all-star finale of ?My Back Pages.?

In mid-1993 Young released the ?Unplugged? album and, rather than go on the road trying to recreate that sound, he, as he famously does, went in another direction and asked Booker T. and the MGs to join him. But there was one difference: At the Garden, Anton Fig of David Letterman?s band was the drummer (original MGs drummer Al Jackson, Jr. was murdered in 1975). For this tour, the drum stool was filled by legendary session drummer Jim Keltner.

In 2002, Young worked with Booker T. and the MGs again on ?Are You Passionate?,? which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. Steve Potts played drums on that album.

The poster advertises two dates in the Pacific Northwest on Young?s 1993 tour of North America and Europe: Sept. 5 at The Gorge in George, Wash., and another the next day at the Portland Meadows Race Track in Portland, Ore. The opening acts were alternative bands Pearl Jam and Blind Melon, so the concert brought together three generations of musicians of diverse styles.

U2 Lists[Ed. note: This is the 38th in a "U2 Lists" series, where @U2 staffers pick a topic and share their personal rankings on something U2-related.]

I believe everyone’s life has a purpose, and that you may never fully realize that purpose in your lifetime. After thinking about the impact of mothers and the ripple effect of their influence in the lives of their children, it’s easy to see how that purpose can touch the lives of generations. Had Iris Hewson not led the life she led, we might not have U2, their music, or the millions of lives changed because of her impact on her youngest son. In honor of Mother’s Day, let’s take a look at how the role of mother has been Bono’s muse in his songwriting.

1. Sacrifice

Mothers make sacrifices for their children. From the beginning of the journey, “always pain before a child is born” in “Yahweh,” to the tragic end in a loss of a child (“Mothers Of The Disappeared“) and all points in between, Bono?s lyrical honesty describes what mothers go through for their children quite fittingly. In “Wave Of Sorrow,” he sings, “blessed is the sex worker’s body sold tonight / she works with what she’s got to save her children’s life.”

2. Unconditional Love

The song “Miracle Drug” spotlights the lengths a mother will go to for her child. Bono said in Blender magazine in 2004, “We all went to the same school and just as we were leaving, a fellow called Christopher Nolan arrived. He had been deprived of oxygen for two hours when he was born, so he was paraplegic. But his mother believed he could understand what was going on and used to teach him at home. Eventually they discovered a drug that allowed him to move one muscle in his neck. So they attached this unicorn device to his forehead and he learned to type. And out of him came all these poems that he’d been storing up in his head. Then he put out a collection called ‘Dam-Burst of Dreams,’ which won a load of awards and he went off to university and became a genius. All because of a mother’s love and a medical breakthrough.”

In “I Will Follow,” that length is reversed where it’s the child who will do anything because of the unconditional love, even if it means doing something unthinkable. Hot Press’ Niall Stokes writes, “In the past, Bono has talked about the song being a sketch about the unconditional love a mother has for a child, but it is clearly more than that. There is a palpable yearning in the lyrics that has much more to do with what a child feels when his mother walks – or is taken – away from him and the suicidal urge to follow. ‘A boy tries hard to be a man / His mother takes him by the hand.’”

3. Separation

While no child wishes to be deserted, there does come a point in life where that separation must come. For Bono, it happened at a very early age and, as we all know, it has shaped his purpose from that moment on.

Both “Tomorrow” and “Mofo” tackle the topic of desertion head-on in different ways. Bono said in Rolling Stone that “Tomorrow” “is a detailed account of my mother’s funeral. But I had no idea when I was writing it.” The 20-year-old Bono was trying to make sense of that day; by the end of the song he is calling out to God for answers.

Jump ahead about 15 years, and a more mature Bono is calling out to his mother in “Mofo.” Bono said in U2 By U2, “It was extraordinary playing ‘Mofo’ live. The song would come to a shuddering halt and there I was, just speaking to my mother in front of 50,000 of my closest friends. Some nights it would really surprise me what an emotional place I would get to.”

4. Terms Of Endearment

Most mothers are used to being called by many names, and Bono doesn’t disappoint in the way he identifies them. The easiest one sung seems to be “mama” as it rolls nicely off the tongue such as “cool down mama, cool off” in “Crumbs From Your Table.” He has also gone with the slang of “mammy” in “Miami,” which is classified as an alternative to the word mama. “Dancing Shoes” uses mama a bit more personally: “I had a mama / she told me ’bout you /she said true love don’t lie.”

Nowhere has Bono been more playful with the term “mama” than in “Big Girls Are Best.” The repetitive use of “sexy mama” is more of a flirty nickname given to the woman who has the “baby at her breast” by her suitor.

“Mother” has also made its way into several songs as a passing mention. “Another Day” mentions “daylight, mother stands in the hall.” In “I’m Not Your Baby,” he writes, “I’m not your mother / you’re not my man / and I’m not your baby.” In “Love You Like Mad,” he describes “M-O-M under a tree.”

The motherhood theme has been tightly woven into the fabric of Bono’s songwriting since the beginning of his career and I am sure will continue to pop up in the future. Bill Flanagan wrote in U2: At The End Of The World that a fortuneteller once told Iris Hewson she would bear a son, whose name would start with “P,” and who would achieve fame in whatever life he chose. Her life’s purpose continues to touch all of our lives. If she didn’t influence her son, who knows where we all would be.

It’s officially “Jay-Z Day” in the media. Catching up with Hova in Phildelphia after announcing his “Made In America” music festival, CNN (yep, C.N.N.) asked the rapper/mogul about Barack Obama’s open support of gay marriage.

“I’ve always thought it as something that was still, um, holding the country back,” said Jay-Z about same-s-x couple not being allowed to legally marry. “What people do in their own homes is their business and you can choose to love whoever you love. That’s their business. [It] is no different than discriminating against blacks. It’s discrimination plain and simple.”

A long time Obama supporter, the “99 Problems” rapper is still in the POTUS’ corner; particularly so when it comes to what Obama has done to help the ailing economy (which Jay says is a “test of our character”) he inherited. ”Reversing the direction of the decline was a full time job in itself, so I think that it’s stabilizing a bit now as some of the numbers show,” said Jigga.

Watch Jay-Z’s chat with CNN and his thoughts on politics and “talking points” below and on the next page.

Rah Digga Clowns Serena's Rap

Serena Williams’ freestyle rap has gotten a lot of attention online, but the superstar tennis pro had to know that there were going to be detractors. Emcee Rah Digga took a few pot shots at Serena–but didn’t seem to have too much ill intent behind her lighthearted criticisms.

“”I’m always on top…roofer” Serena Williams’ new song…I mean…ok fine,” she tweeted. “Yeah im so playin tennis now…and basketball…and whatever Amber Rose lists as her occupation…”

Serena just seemed to be having fun, as opposed to making a full-on dive into hip hop. Nonetheless, she had to know this was coming.

Earlier this week, UK producers, Futurecop!, released their much anticipated music video for ?The Only Way.? Starring members of the Parks and Recreations cast, as well as Jon Lajoie from the hit series ?The League,? the video tells the comedic story of a boy who falls in love with a mannequin. A love story behind a backdrop of unicorns, miniature golf, and 1980?s visuals is the perfect compliment for the synth-heavy and dream-inducing melodies of Futurecop!.

Find out about ?We Are The Future? compilation + a mix after the jump!

Whether you want to classify Futurecop! as synthwave/dreamwave/retrowave or sythnpop, one thing is certain, Futurecop!?s music is reminiscent of a time when acid washed jeans and Members Only jackets were the norm. Futurecop! is not alone in emulating sounds from the 1980?s, and in order to introduce the world to artists with similar thoughts and ideals, they curated a compilation titled ?We Are The Future.? With tracks from personal favorites Anoraak, Fear of Tigers, and Lifelike, ?We Are The Future? is the perfect companion for a summertime escape from the surrounding world. ?We Are The Future? will be available June 5th, 2012.

The death of Booker T. and the MGs bass player Donald ?Duck? Dunn has shaken the entire music world, with many rock greats logging on to Twitter to say how much Dunn?s music meant to them. One of those is Slash, who tweeted the message below to his more than 1.5 million followers.

Dunn passed away in his sleep Sunday morning (May 13) after playing two shows at the Blue Note nightclub in Tokyo. His work graced innumerable classic soul records, including every hit by such Stax Records legends as Otis Redding, Sam and Dave and Eddie Floyd. As a session musician, he worked with many of rock?s most famous blues-influenced stars, including Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Rod Stewart. He also appeared as himself in the 1980 film ?The Blues Brothers,? starring Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi.

Slash is currently on tour promoting his upcoming album, ?Apocalyptic Love,? which will be released May 22 on his own Dik Hayd label.

Tim Burton Actors

Tim Burton works with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter — again — in ‘Dark Shadows.’

This weekend marks the release of Tim Burton’s “Dark Shadows,” and for his updated take on the creepy ’70s soap opera, he’s cast — no surprises, here — Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

This will be the eighth time Burton has worked with Depp (“Edward Scissorhands,” “Ed Wood,” Sleepy Hollow,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “The Corpse Bride,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Alice in Wonderland” and “Shadows”). Carter, meanwhile, has worked with real-life partner Tim a total of seven times, starting with 2000′s “Planet of the Apes,” moving onto “Big Fish” and then becoming the inseparable third component of all ensuing Depp-Burton collaborations.

If you’re in the business of making big-budget fantasy blockbusters, then it’s natural to keep working with your best friend and the mother to your children (especially if it’s creatively fruitful). However, it’s time to mix things up. “Dark Shadows” looks cool and Depp and Carter are fine, but the final product is a boring, sluggish mess of a story that doesn’t do nearly enough with the premise. Following the slump that came with their all-style, no-substance rendition of “Alice,” it’s clear the director needs time away from his two favorite actors, to work with fresh blood who will get his creative juices flowing again.

What is required to be the star of a Tim Burton movie? You need to be willing to take on bizarre, macabre characters. His casts do not operate in bleach-blond sunny California worlds; they’re gray and dreary and require a gothic disposition. Below is a list of 12 actors that could fit right in with Burton’s pale-faced world and provide a much-needed jolt of energy.

PHOTOS:

  • Tom Hiddleston

This trickster is noted for playing fantastical characters with Shakespearean grandeur. Plus, he really knows how to rock a cape.

  • Marion Cotillard

The French ingenue is prone to playing unforgettable beauties that haunt men’s dreams.

  • Cillian Murphy

The Irish lad has a smoldering — if slightly creepy — commitment to character. And he’s up for pretty much anything on camera.

  • Jennifer Connelly

Whether she’s sharing the screen with Muppets, Rocketeers or tragically-doomed lovers, Connelly has been an unmistakable raven-haired beauty.

  • James McAvoy

When he’s not taking on sweeping tales of love and death, this dashing gentleman has a sweet tooth for fantasy.

  • Tilda Swinton

The eternally cool and totally idiosyncratic leading lady has a daring personal style that matches her unflappable acting presence.

  • Ezra Miller

The young acting sensation just got past his teenage years and he’s already an avant garde presence, thanks to risky character choices such as Kevin Khatchadourian in “We Need to Talk About Kevin.”

  • Saoirse Ronan

Despite her youth, Ronan has built up an impressive collection of roles (“Hanna,” “Atonement”) that are wise beyond their years.

  • Lee Pace

Before he gets set to take on the worlds of “Twilight” and “The Hobbit,” Pace built up a cult following with quirky performances on TV shows like “Wonderfalls” and “Pushing Daisies.”

  • Karen Gillian

The model-turned-actress has captured geek hearts as Amy Pond, the companion to Doctor Who.

  • Noel Fielding

The glam rock sketch comedian from BBC’s “The Mighty Boosh” loves to get slathered in make-up and play some weird, weird creatures.

  • Emilia Clarke

The silver-haired would-be-royalty of “Games of Thrones,” has already mastered dragons in the world of Westeros; she wouldn’t be caught off-guard by any of Burton’s eccentricities.

Two years ago, Poison frontman Bret Michaels suffered a life-threatening brain hemorrhage, and he credits the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph?s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz. for delivering him from death?s doorstep.

Since then, he?s donated a music room to the institute, and now he?s also helping celebrate the hospital?s 50th anniversary.

A video Michaels did for the occasion is part of ?The 50 Years, 50 Faces Project,? which features clips of Barrow patients and staff recounting stories of the hospital?s impact on them. In Bret?s video, he sends his utmost thanks to ?my good friends [at Barrow] for saving my life.?

It?s not surprising he?d lend his voice to the project ? Michaels has often publicly expressed his gratitude to Barrow, and last fall he even donated a music room (dubbed the Bret Michaels Hospitality and Music Room) that has listening stations, relaxation areas, video monitors, comfortable sofas and a refreshment area for patients? families.

?If they?re here all night, searching their soul, a lot of people that are going through a very devastating time in their life,? he said at the time. ?I want to give something back to the hospital that helped save my life.?

Michaels has done other work for Barrows as well. Last spring he performed at the Celebrity Fight Night in Phoenix and auctioned off a dinner for 10 people at his home, with the proceeds going toward the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, which is also located at the neurological institute.

When he isn?t paying it forward, Bret is working on his new solo album, ?Get Your Rock On,? and of course prepping with his Poison bandmates for their upcoming summer tour with Def Leppard.

Big Sean's Phone Call From Ma$e

As hip hop veteran Ma$e preps what looks to be his third attempt at a musical comeback, G.O.O.D. Music rapper Big Sean revealed that the former Bad Boy star gave him a call unexpectedly and the two could possibly be collaborating in the very near future.

“Mase just hit me up, too,” Sean told Hot 97′s Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg. “We got something in the works.”

“He surprised me, he called me just out of nowhere. He was like, ‘What’s up, this Mase — I’m really digging your style. We need to work on something,’” he added. “I’m like, ‘What the f*ck?’ [laughs] Nah, but, that’s somebody I came up listening to, that whole Bad Boy era — we got something in the works for him, a lot of people.”
