The third set of results from the 2012 U2 Fan Survey is now available, and it takes us through your votes on U2′s albums and songs.
As a reminder, the survey was open from April 5th through April 30th. We received completed responses from 3,530 fans in 79 countries this year, both of which are down from 2010. We think that’s likely due to the band being in down-time right now, meaning less traffic to @U2 and fewer fans being aware of the survey.
Achtung Baby gains in popularity. Achtung Baby has been U2 fans’ favorite album in each survey we’ve done, but it’s even more loved today than it was in the 2010 survey. Then, it received about 44 percent of the votes, and this year it picked up more than 49 percent. The albums that seem to have lost the most this year (compared to 2010) were All That You Can’t Leave Behind and No Line On The Horizon. (However, both of those albums gained votes in the “Most Underrated U2 Album” question.)
But Achtung Baby‘s remaster didn’t beat The Joshua Tree. In fact, 520 more survey takers said that they bought The Joshua Tree remaster than bought the Achtung Baby remaster.
“Ultra Violet” is a big winner. For the first time, this song was named as the most popular song from Achtung Baby. You have to credit the 360 tour for that. In the 2007 survey, it was a distant third behind “One” and “Until The End Of The World” and had only 10 percent of the vote. In 2010, after the first two legs of the 360 tour, “Ultra Violet” had 17 percent of the vote, but was still behind “One.” This year, it beat “One” by 20.2 percent to 17.2 percent.
Most other song questions were unchanged from 2010. One exception was that “Night And Day” became the top vote-getter for “Best Cover Song U2 Has Done,” beating the 2010 winner, “Unchained Melody.”
